Ukraine is one of few countries of the world where aviation and space engineering are developed and manufactured and where skilled specialists are trained for these areas. The National Aerospace University Kharkiv Aviation Institute is the leading one among the Ukrainian educational institutions which turn out such specialists.

 The KhAI was founded in 1930. Its history is closely connected with the development of aircraft engineering and science. The University is famous for its creation of the first in Europe high-speed airplane with a retractable landing gear and the creation of the design of the turbojet engine developed by teacher of the KhAI A. M. Liulka who afterwards became the academician and designer of many structures of aircraft engines including the engine of the aircraft Su-27.

       The KhAI is a unique higher educational institution where the airplanes developed by the Institute Design Burean under the supervision of professor I. G. Neman were produced serially at the aircraft plants and run on passenger airlines. 

       From 1977 to 1984 the Designer General O.K. Antonov run the department of airplane structure at the KhAI.

       In 1978 the KhAI was given the name of N. Ye. Zhukovskiy. In 1980 the Institute was awarded with the order of Lenin. In 1998 the N. Ye. Zhukovskiy State Aerospace University “Kharkov Aviation Institute” was founded on the basis of the KhAI and in 2000 the University got a status of the National higher educational institution and got a name of the National Aerospace Uuniversity Kharkiv Aviation Institute.

       During the period of its existence the University has trained about 60 ths engineers. More than 80% of the specialists with higher education who work in Ukrainian aerospace area are the graduates of the KhAI.

       At present about 9.5 ths students and 160 post-graduate students are trained at the University; 650 teachers and 2.5 ths employers work here. Among theme there are 120 Professors and Candidates of Science. Among the teachers of the University there are also: 1 USSR State Lenin Prize winner, 7 USSR State Prize winners, 28 Ukraine State Prize winners, 11 USSR Council of Ministers Prize winners.

       The KhAI is a member of International Association of Universitys; Global Association, Organization of Industry and Airport Technology; it is also in the International Catalogue and belongs to the Association of higher educational institutions of Kharkiv city INTERVUZ, as well as to the Aerospace Agency of Ukraine.

       The KhAI is a co-executor of some programs which are carried out with universities and companies of USA, Japan, Germany, France, Mexico and Chine. The University takes part in the program of creation of “Alfa” international space station. 

       In 1992 the KhAI resumed the training of foreign students over 500 foreign citizens from 40 countries of Asia, Africa and America are trained annually at the University.

       The KhAI covers a separate territory of the city in the forest-part zone, its area amounts to about 25 hectares. The University has 8 academic buildings, research institute and laboratories, library will 1 ml volume in stock, campus, sporty complex, swimming pool, preventurium clinic of first medical aid, dining halls, bank, children garden, etc.

Kharkiv

Kharkiv region is the picturesque and favored land, where good, beautiful, talented and hardworking people live. They love their homeland, preserve the history of their ancestors and maintain their heritage. Today Kharkiv region is the leading industrial, agricultural, scientific and cultural region of Ukraine, which cooperates with many countries.

Kharkiv region is the most powerful educational and scientific center of Ukraine. Its potential is measured by the following indicators: 624 preschool educational institutions, 965 secondary ones, 111 out-of-school institutions, 58 vocational ones, 92 higher educational institutions of all levels of accreditation and over 200 scientific institutions. Kharkiv higher education is represented by 14 institutions that have the status of National, where about 292 thousand people study, what is very significant. During recent years scientific base of Kharkiv takes one of the leading places among regions of Ukraine for the scientific development and innovations. Kharkiv scientific schools are world-renowned.

Kharkiv is a city in North Eastern Ukraine; it is the administrative center of Kharkiv region. Kharkiv is the largest scientific, cultural, industrial and transport center of Ukraine.

The combination of potential of higher educational institutions and of research institutions let create appropriate conditions for the development of international education market. Almost all educational and scientific centers of Kharkiv actively cooperate with relevant EU and world institutions; they have many joint scientific and educational projects aimed at the involvement of Ukrainian scientists and specialists into joint research programs, they provide a gradual integration of the Ukrainian education system, while obtaining the standards required, into European system.

Today, when the borders of the countries which are the EU members are very close to Ukraine and the European institutions’ activity applies not only to new countries, but also to new areas of activity, information about the EU is particularly valuable and becomes increasingly important. Creation of the EU Information Center in the student capital of Eastern Ukraine lets understand better the processes of European integration of our state, provides with current and comprehensive information about the EU and its relations with the outside world.

As in any other modern higher educational institution, at the KhAI the international cooperation is a strategic direction to activity, which is aimed at the integration of the university as a whole and its separate subdivisions into world educational space. 1. The Program of Tempus/Tacis European Community

is one of several programs of the European Community, directed on rendering the assistance in the process of social and economic reforms in partner-countries. The Tempus Program gives the grants for creation of new or the transformation of already existing scholastic courses, restructuring of educational institutions, promotion of joint activity for the organizations (academic and non-academic)on a specific discipline.

1. The Programs of International Association of students and young specialist involved in economy, management and AIESEC information technology

is a program of the international practical trainings giving practical knowledge in the field of economy, management and AIESEC information technology. It deals with conduction of international conferences, projects, lectures, seminars amongst youth in many cities of Ukraine.

1. The Edmund Masky Scholarship Program

is intended for a study at magistracies on economic and humanistic major subjects. 1. The Fullbright Academic Exchange Program

comprises the program of practical training for young teachers of higher educational institutions, cholarships for carrying out research studies or for delivering lectures at the universities of USA, program of scientists exchange for American researchers and lecturers , scholarships for training at the universities of USA. The purpose of the program is to extend the exchange of scientific information, strengthening of cooperation between scientific communities of Ukraine and USA, granting the possibilities for scientific activity in a broad spectrum of social and humanitarian problems.

1. The Program of the Council of IREX International Scientific studies and exchange "Act in support of the liberty"

gives a chance to first, second and the third year students (the higher educational institutions with five year system of training) to be trained on length of one year at a university or at 2-4-year college of USA. 1. The national information centre for Ukraine-EU S&T cooperation-NIP Ukraine.

NIP Ukraine activities are focused on informing scientific community on possibilities of the EU Framework Programmes (starting from FP6), INTAS calls and other possibilities for international R&D cooperation in Ukraine.
